sew + tell, lisette B6423
I’ve finally completed my coat, and I must say, I couldn’t be prouder of how it turned out! Sharing it with you feels great, but taking pictures? Not exactly my favorite thing to do. Does anyone else feel the same way when it comes to modeling their own creations? Name: Liesl. Project Details How did the fabric hold up? Let me tell you, this fabric was no walk in the park! But isn’t that what sewing is all about—taking on challenges? I wanted to create something truly warm for those freezing winter days, so I opted for a full Thinsulate lining. I found this furry turquoise wool in Paris, and I knew it would make for a bold statement piece. Combining the color with the thickness of the wool and the insulation was just perfect for what I had in mind. How was the sewing experience? It went smoothly overall, but there were definitely some hurdles. Before sewing the lining, I basted the Thinsulate to it to keep things manageable. As I sewed each seam of the lining, I carefully trimmed away the excess Thinsulate from the seam allowances to avoid any unnecessary bulk. The collar was another story. To ensure it had enough volume, I decided to underline it as well. While I adore how cozy it turned out, it certainly presented its fair share of challenges. Getting the collar to roll correctly was tricky, so I added a hand-stitched pickstitch along the edge of the collar and center front to help manage the bulk. I also added a single row of padstitching underneath the collar to encourage the layers to fold neatly. Now, let’s talk buttons. When you’re dealing with two layers of interfaced thick wool plus a layer of Thinsulate, traditional buttonholes simply don’t cut it. My solution? Bound buttonholes. After practicing a few times on scraps, I felt confident enough to give it a shot. Unfortunately, one of the glass buttons broke during the process. A quick fix with superglue did the trick, and it’s barely noticeable now. What was the best part? This coat might not be for everyone, but it’s exactly what I envisioned. Compared to my yellow coat, which is lighter and less bulky, this one has much more volume. It’s perfect for the kind of harsh winters I experience, offering both warmth and style. Sewing this coat was such a rewarding experience—it was fun tackling all the challenges, and completing a project that took so much time gave me a real boost of confidence. I made sure to take my time throughout the process, even crafting a custom label and hanging loop, to ensure I was satisfied with every decision I made. I’m really glad I took on this challenge. Now I’m excited to wear it out and see how it holds up in the real world! Shaoxing Ruier Imp. & Exp. Co.,Ltd , https://www.pasatextiles.com
