According to Andrew, founder of marketing agency Anzhi Zhi Yang, fast fashion is defined by three key elements: quick turnaround, affordability, and keeping up with the latest trends. Unlike traditional fashion, where it might take months for new designs to reach stores, ZARA can replicate and launch similar styles within just two weeks. This allows consumers to enjoy high-fashion looks at a fraction of the price—often less than half or even one-tenth of what top designers charge. The target audience for fast fashion is primarily people aged 25 to 35. These individuals are often recent college graduates, with limited income but a strong desire to stay stylish. Unfortunately, many domestic apparel brands have overlooked this group. A source from Smith Barney revealed that currently, there is a gap in the market for this age group. Established brands like Youngor and Shanshan focus more on broader markets or have expanded into other industries such as finance. Meanwhile, brands like Baleno, Jeanswest, and Giordano cater to younger audiences aged 16 to 22, creating intense competition in that segment. On the other end of the spectrum, the market for older consumers—those over 40—is also highly competitive, with brands like Septwolves, Lilang, and Rimula battling for dominance. As a result, the fashion industry is becoming increasingly segmented by age, and the 25 to 35 demographic remains largely untapped. These individuals are entering the workforce, their incomes are rising, and their need for professional yet stylish attire is growing. Yet, few brands have focused on meeting these specific needs. Anjie, a fashion analyst, sees Smith Barney’s move into the fast-fashion space as a logical and strategic decision. “Metersbont Granville was originally targeted at 16- to 22-year-olds,” she explains. “But 10 years later, those same consumers are now in their late 20s, earning more, and no longer suitable for student-style clothing. Smith Barney must continue to adapt and offer more fashionable, design-driven products to meet the evolving tastes of this group.” With the right strategy, Smith Barney may not only survive in this competitive landscape but also establish itself as a major player in the fast-fashion market.
