sew + tell: rita’s scuba bento tee

Sure! Here's the rewritten content: ---

Hey everyone! Do you remember Rita? She’s the awesome mom from Madrid who hosted Flat S last year, and you won’t believe what she pulled off recently. When Rita and her kids welcomed Flat S into their home, they shared a memorable evening filled with laughter and delicious tapas. Since then, we’ve had the absolute joy of getting to know her amazing family—and yes, eating even more tapas with them. Recently, Liesl and S made plans to attend Creativa Madrid with Rita, and when she arrived, she stunned everyone with an incredibly unique top. At first, it took us a moment (and a bit of detective work!) to figure out what it was. Once we realized its origin, we thought you’d love seeing her incredible creation as much as we did. So here’s Rita for this week’s Sew + Tell feature!

Pattern used: Liesl + Co. Bento Tee
Fabric used: Scuba knit, around 5mm thick

Did the fabric work well?

The scuba knit fabric was absolutely perfect for this project. It gave me exactly the structured look I was aiming for, and I’m a huge fan of structured clothing! The fabric’s firmness really helped achieve that clean, polished silhouette I love.

How did the sewing go?

Cutting out all the pieces took a bit of time, but once that was done, the actual sewing process was super fast—around 30 minutes total! This pattern is so straightforward and beginner-friendly, which makes it a dream to work with. And the best part? No hemming or finishing seams required because the fabric’s stretchy structure does all the heavy lifting. Talk about convenience!

What was the best part?

Hands down, the best part was creating a sweater that perfectly matched my vision. Clean lines, structure, and pockets—yes, I absolutely cannot live without pockets! The pattern pieces were clear, the instructions were spot-on, and before I knew it, my tee was ready to wear. It’s one of those projects that feels rewarding right away.

Fun fact: Rita didn’t rip apart her husband’s wetsuit to make this top. For more insights into sourcing and working with scuba knit, check out her blog post. Spoiler alert—it’s not as complicated as it seems!
