Physical and chemical properties of polypropylene (PP) plastics

Polypropylene, commonly known as PP, is a thermoplastic polymer derived from propylene. It has a chemical structure that makes it lightweight and highly versatile. With a specific gravity ranging from 0.9 to 0.91 g/cm³, PP is one of the lightest plastics available. Its molding shrinkage typically falls between 1.0% and 2.5%, and it requires a molding temperature range of 160°C to 220°C for optimal results. PP offers excellent mechanical properties, including good strength, stiffness, and hardness, which are superior to low-density polyethylene. It can withstand temperatures up to around 100°C, making it suitable for a variety of applications. Additionally, it exhibits good electrical insulation properties, especially at high frequencies, and is not significantly affected by humidity. However, it tends to become brittle at low temperatures and may degrade over time when exposed to UV light or certain environmental conditions. This material is ideal for manufacturing general-purpose mechanical components, corrosion-resistant parts, and electrical insulation components. Its versatility makes it widely used in industries such as packaging, automotive, and consumer goods. In terms of molding characteristics, polypropylene is a crystalline material with low moisture absorption. It is prone to melt fracture if not handled carefully, and prolonged exposure to hot metal surfaces can lead to decomposition. The material has good flow properties, but its wide shrinkage range can result in issues like sink marks, warping, and deformation if not properly controlled. Cooling should be gradual, and both the gating system and cooling system must be designed accordingly. The mold temperature plays a crucial role; if it's below 50°C, the surface finish may be poor, leading to welding lines and flow marks. On the other hand, if the mold temperature exceeds 90°C, warpage can occur. Therefore, maintaining proper temperature control is essential during the molding process. To ensure quality, the wall thickness of the plastic part should be uniform. Avoiding sharp corners and uneven thickness helps prevent stress concentration and issues like incomplete filling. Overall, polypropylene is a reliable and cost-effective material, provided that the molding parameters are carefully managed.
