Natural fibers like cotton and silk are commonly used in sewing threads. Cotton threads offer good strength and heat resistance, making them ideal for high-speed sewing and durable pressing. However, they have limited elasticity and wear resistance. Some cotton threads are waxed or coated after sizing to improve strength and reduce friction during sewing, which makes them suitable for stiff fabrics and leather. Silk threads, on the other hand, are soft, lustrous, and stronger than cotton, but they are more expensive and less heat-resistant. They are often used in high-end cotton products, though domestic processing techniques sometimes fail to achieve the desired durability, leading to breakage under pressure.
Polyester threads, including both filament and staple types, are widely used due to their high strength, low shrinkage, and excellent abrasion and heat resistance. They are particularly suitable for sewing cotton, synthetic, and blended fabrics. Short-staple polyester threads are the most common, while low-elastic polyester and nylon threads are often used in knitted garments like sportswear, underwear, and tights. Blended yarns that combine polyester with silk offer better flexibility, shine, and toughness, making them popular in delicate fabrics. For ultra-thin materials, polyester or nylon filaments are preferred.
Nylon threads are known for their high strength, bright gloss, and good elasticity, but they are not ideal for high-speed sewing or high-temperature ironing due to their lower heat resistance. They are commonly used for sewing synthetic fabrics and attaching buttons. Monofilament nylon is suitable for elastic fabrics, such as those used in hemming, trousers, sleeves, and buttonholes. It is also used in decorative elements like belt buckles, Chinese-style cuffs, and open-line embellishments.
Blended yarns, such as polyester-cotton blends (typically 65:35 ratio) and cored yarns, combine the benefits of different fibers. These threads are soft, wear-resistant, and heat-resistant, making them ideal for various fabrics. Cored yarns, with a cotton outer layer and polyester core, offer softness, elasticity, and minimal shrinkage, making them perfect for medium to thick fabrics. Their versatility ensures wide application in the textile industry.
Gold and silver decorative threads add a luxurious touch with vibrant, elegant colors. Rayon-based decorative threads, made from viscose, have a smooth feel and good luster, though they are not as strong as silk. Decorative gold and silver threads, created by coating polyester fibers with color, are increasingly popular for patterns, open lines, and accents in traditional and modern clothing designs.
