Beware of fraudulent use of origin for export footwear products

Recently, the Chaozhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau uncovered three cases of false origin markings during inspections of exported footwear. One notable case occurred on July 15, when a foreign trade company in Chaozhou produced a batch of plastic slippers and sandals, totaling 32,052 pairs worth $62,849.76. The product was labeled with the Spanish phrase “Hecho en Malasia,†meaning “Made in Malaysia,†but the actual country of origin was Venezuela. According to the company’s representative, the shoe soles were provided by the customer, who required the label to be affixed. However, due to a lack of understanding of Spanish among the company's staff and quality inspectors, the incorrect label was mistakenly applied.
During further inspection of the production process, another sample intended for export to Venezuela was found with the same “Hecho en Malasia†logo, which had been supplied by the customer. The inspection team immediately instructed the company to remove the misleading labels and conducted a briefing on relevant regulations to ensure compliance. This incident highlights the importance of proper labeling and adherence to international standards in export operations.
In response, the Chaozhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has issued a warning to footwear exporters, urging them to enhance their legal awareness and improve their foreign trade practices. While maintaining high standards for product quality, safety, health, and environmental protection, companies must also remain vigilant against fraudulent activities such as counterfeiting. It is crucial for businesses to carefully review any logos or labels provided by customers and to reject any requests that may lead to non-compliance. Staying informed and proactive can help avoid costly mistakes and protect the reputation of both the company and its international partners.
